Compress Video to 8 MB, Checked Before You Download
You still run into an 8 MB cap on some forums, support and help desk forms, and older chat apps. Drop your video in and the target is already set to 8 MB: ClipCut works out the quality that fits, checks the size of the finished file and re-encodes smaller if it is over. Nothing is uploaded.
Auto makes a sharp 720p MP4. Pick a size and ClipCut aims just under it, then checks the real file size. 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes.
Your file never leaves this device. Closing the editor wipes it.
How to use the Compress Video to 8 MB
- Drop in the video. Cut it shorter first if you only need part of it.
- Check that 8 MB is selected as the target size.
- Press Compress to 8 MB, check the size shown on the result and download.
How long a video fits
ClipCut keeps 720p up to about 50 seconds, drops to 480p up to about 1 minute 50, and can fit up to about 6 minutes at low quality. Shorter videos stay sharper, so trim what you do not need first.
Checked, not guessed
A bitrate is only a target, so ClipCut measures the finished file. If it is over 8 MB it re-encodes smaller, up to twice. If it still cannot fit, it says so and shows the closest size instead of claiming success.
Frequently asked questions
Will the file be exactly 8 MB?
No, it aims just under 8 MB, so it is usually a little smaller. The real size is shown before you download.
Is 8 MB still the Discord limit?
No. Discord raised the free limit to 20 MB per file (checked October 2026). Use Compress Video to 20 MB for Discord.
Why does the size look different on my computer?
ClipCut counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, like phones, Macs and most upload limits. Windows counts 1,048,576, so a file just under 8 MB here shows a little smaller there.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is compressed in your browser on your own device and never leaves it.
